FIELD GUIDE · Split: Bills with Friends
Split a receipt by what everyone ordered
A careful workflow for checking receipt text, assigning items and reconciling a shared bill before sending payment details.
Editorial review:
Start with the receipt total
Create a purchase and import a photo, PDF or supported image. Treat recognized text as a draft: check item names, quantities, prices and the printed subtotal before assigning anything. Unusual layouts, discounts and faint photos can confuse receipt recognition.
For a dinner receipt, make sure the appetizer appears once, each entrée has the right price and the printed tax and tip are included as intended. Split uses integer cents and checks that the resulting shares reconcile; do not force a split through a mismatch you have not explained.
Choose the allocation that matches the meal
Use an equal split when everyone agreed to share the whole purchase evenly. Use a custom amount when the group already decided on fixed contributions. Use itemized splitting when people ordered different items: assign each line to the people who shared it, then review how tax and tip are allocated from the item subtotals.
If an item was shared, assign it to each person who took part rather than counting the line twice as two separate purchases. Check the final per-person totals against what the group agreed before saving.
Share a request, then track payment separately
Review the participant names and the per-person message preview. The app can open a share or messaging composer with the request details, and supported flows allow friends to claim items through a private link. Confirm the recipient and amount before you send anything from your own messaging app.
Sharing a payment link does not move money or mark the balance paid. Record a payment only after the people involved confirm it; provider transfer status is not verified by the split record.
Keep the scope clear
A saved split is a calculation and a shared record, not a bank transfer. Receipt recognition requires human review, and the totals need to match before they can be saved. If the receipt is not readable, enter the purchase manually and keep a copy in the private storage the app provides.
This guide describes the iPhone receipt and sharing workflow. Features differ between the native beta and the separate browser workspace; the browser inbox may require a provisioned account, while the iPhone beta stores its data on that device and has no cloud synchronization between accounts.
